Interview: 10 Questions

1.
When did you start making music, what is/was your motivation to do it?

The nonprofit corporation « Les Riches Douaniers » has been created in 2000 to study the relation between images and sound. It experiments the influence of music on image understanding.

Tell me something about your living environment and the musical education.

We constantly create new pages on websites. Those are entierly musicalize (MIDI format). We organized concerts with both images and musics (video webconcerts).

Is making music your profession? What is the context in which you practice music nowadays?

One of the member of « Les Riches Douaniers » is a professional musician.

We are dedicating a full story on the myth of the character Karapika. The site www.karapika.com provide a musical website to Karapika. Currently we’ve written 13 chapters, devided in 2 books on the site. A DVD shows the first book and is near to be released. It contains re-mastered musics with synthetizers and computers.
In parallels we are realizing videos with a character from a virtual world that is inspired by computer games.

How do you compose or create music or sound? Have you certain principles, use certain styles etc?

We are working with a strict principle that rely upon the musicalisation of words and letters ( « Word Generic Music »). Those one emerges from Karapika’s stories. Also we are using MIDI to create pieces.

Tell me something about the instruments, technical equipment or tools you use?

We use intruments like acoustic piano, synthetizer, computer and human voice to create our digital musics.

What are the chances of New Media for the music production in general and you personally?

Using digital processing invited us to realize things in a new way of building; probably a more efficient way. Development is quicker and simplier in its management by using digital from start.

With Internet, we can spread musics more quickly and more vastly. We dedicatingly created web-concerts for the net. They are played in live (please refer to the page http://www.palaisdetokyo-2.com/page28.htm for more information). One of this concert has been broadcast in stores called Fnac ( those are computer-department store in France).

How about producing and financing your musical productions?

At present, we are producing something related to an exhibition with the city of Dijon in France.

Do you work individually as a musician/ soundartist or in a group or collaborative?

If you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
Les Riches Douaniers is a group of 2 people. Sometimes we ask to external partners, like singers, to rpovide help (specially for dedicated orders).

9.
Is there any group, composer, style or movement which has a lasting influence on making music?

We Definitely like minimalist music (mostly american).

What are your future plans or dreams as a soundartist or musician?

From now on, we are working on a musical that will be presented in a festival in Dijon.
